    I have a question? That's a trill in bars 1 and 2, but you--and everyone else--appear to only play a mordent, i.e., you just play the main note, the lower note and back to the main note. Being a trill, I would have expected you to have played the main note, the lower note, the main note and the lower note again, very rapidly. I'm just a beginner, but that's what I hear. My question therefore: How EXACTLY is one to play the notated trills in bars 1 and 2? I look forward to your reply and thank you in advance for your time.

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic 21 день назад

      Hello Hotsk, you are correct, it should be played as a 4-note trill. Please listen to the full performance at the end of this video. You will hear at 23:32 that I play a 4-note trill, starting with the main note, the lower note, the main note, and the lower note. I hope this answers your question. Best wishes to you.

    • @Hotsk
      @Hotsk 21 день назад

      @@SallyChristianMusic Thank you so much for the quick response, although even when you play the piece at the end of the video, I still hear the mordent, not a 4-note trill. Why do you think most pianists--at least that's what I appear to be hearing in all these videos of persons performing the piece--play a mordent instead of the trill? Is it because of the tempo, that they don't have time to play 4 notes, so they just play two? Anyway, that's my problem with playing this piece: I can't seem to play a clean 4-note trill.

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic 20 дней назад

      @@Hotsk You are welcome. It can take a long time to develop the technical facility to play a fast, even, and clean 4-note trill. I think you are right that the reason some people play a mordent instead of a trill is because they do not yet have the facility to play four notes cleanly at a faster tempo. This should not stop anyone from playing the piece, however. Ornaments are embellishments, and I think playing the piece with shortened ornaments (or no ornaments if necessary) until one has the facility to play full trills is preferable to not playing the piece at all.

    This wonderful music is featured in the film, A Month in the Country, starring Colin Firth, Kenneth Branagh, and Natasha Richardson. It features as an organ recital, whilst Birkin( Firth) gazes longingly at the vicar's wife (Richardson) as she passes by a cafe window, through which their eyes meet. A poignant moment for it is an expression of a mutual love that will not be openly declared or realised. To a Wild Rose is the perfect, wistful theme. Memorable.

      Hello William, thank you for your wonderful comment! I really appreciate you sharing this touching story line in the film "A Month in the Country." With all best wishes to you.

      Indeed. The film was based on the novella by J.L. Carr, whom his biographer, Byron Rogers, defined as ' The Last Englishman.' Just so. Perhaps it is those traditional ( and, sadly, passing ), English values of honour, faithfulness, and respect that the story and MacDowell's wistful melody so vividly evoke. Regards, William.

    One thing that interests me as someone learning the piece, the manuscript says the initial part is ppp but I see a lot of people playing this part quite loud, I'm not really sure if I should be playing it loud or very softly.

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic Месяц назад

      Hello bleesev2, thank you for your question. The opening introductory three octaves, notes A, G#, & C# are marked fff. Immediately after this, Theme I begins and is marked ppp with occasional swells to mf. The overall sound for this Theme I section should be very soft. After the Development Section, the introductory and Theme I material is heard again beginning in measure 43. Everything has transformed and has become huge with dynamic markings of fff & ffff. Best wishes to you and with your playing of this magnificent prelude. 🎶
